but then my awesome friend brought me here. and i was hooked. i tried several of the different types of pho on the menu, and they've all been delicious. i had the roast pork one, where the roast pork was served on the side. i had the one where the meat is slightly medium rare and discovered medium rare is so much better than well done, especially in such a hot soup. then the last time i went i had the one with the satay sauce and the usually clear and clean tasting broth was flavored with this amazing slightly spicy sauce, really gave it this great kick.
then the additional dishes -- the soft shell crab was amazing, so was this vegetable whose english name is unknown to me.. but its green and crunchy, like some variation of spinach but with a hollow center.. kinda like a plate of mushy green straws. my favorite veggie dish.
this is a great place to go when you are super starving and want your food served piping hot and extremely fast!

most notable in my mind -- the spicy crab soup.
the $1 oysters were really good as well.
this is a great place to go when you want to dine out, someplace nice that has the option of being either a cute date night or a casual grab-dinner-and-go spot. and after you're done, head right next door to coco66 for some fun music, pool, darts, drinks, and dancing.

the service is great, the food is always fantastic -- i had the catfish last night and i'd make it blue ribbon two nights in a row if my bank account allowed. im really picky when it comes to fish at restaurants because i find the crappy ones always overcook it and the fish comes out peppery and dry. at blue ribbon, it was perfect. and the flavor was phenomenal. the escargot is also extremely flavorful and comes out more like a stew with juicy pieces of mushroom, carrots, soaked bread...mmm deliciousness. and i must agree with the other reviews, the best dessert on their menu is definitely the chocolate bruno.
although the restaurant is nothing architecturally spectacular, it is a nice cozy spot, very small, so get there early to avoid the wait.

DESSERT!!!!! i am such a sucker for sweets. and this place has got some fantastic desserts. and i think it is just incredibly awesome that they've decided to incorporate the use of the grill not only for the main part of the meal, but also for dessert. why not? its already there anyway! (dont worry, you wont be eating meat-flavored cake, they change the grill for you in between)
both times that i've gone to the restaurant i've ordered the yakimochi. which is basically a couple of pieces of this mochi thing that you throw onto the grill, it gets all cute and puffed up and you eat it with ice cream. yuuummm. my friends have ordered this other dessert with some kind of a pancake that you heat up on the grill, red bean paste, and ice cream, also really good.
and.. working backwards i guess, yummy sides include: asparagus and SWEET POTATO. whats also great about the marinated beef is that you get to select from a couple of different kinds of marinades.
the decor is nice, definitely a date-worthy spot! so... go! but not when i do.. because i dont want to get stuck waiting for a table.

p.s. There has been an article in the NY Times which mentions this store but it was written back in 2003. I'm hoping that by posting this here that more people could share their opinions about it.

but then out of the corner of my eye, i spotted a group at a table.. so drunk that they were dancing and swaying to the german music on top of the benches, rip down a bunch of decorations from the ceiling, collapse onto their bench and are holding themselves up by leaning against each other... you know that its time. its time for them to leave. and sure enough, once you spot those classic beer-smash symptoms... start making your way to that table. usually they leave shortly after. and usually they also leave various personal belongings behind. (im not saying you should take them. that would be wrong. just shove them out of the way under the table)
begin ordering a platter of those sausages, get a few more rounds of beer, and let the real fun begin. somehow those crazy sausages and the ginormous pretzel melts all your troubles away.
btw girls, if you find yourself needing to use the bathroom.. make sure you have someone at your table save you some food. the bathrooms lines are so long that by the time i got back to my table, everything was GONE.

yes, the lines are long, but the prices are really reasonable. if you want a burger, i'd suggest getting the shack stack. incredibly good...and a whole lot more exciting than your normal average cheeseburger.
and dont get a seat next to the flat screen tvs because those videos are not only boring, but the sounds coming from the speakers are really annoying as well, unless you like to listen to the sounds of dogs barking and tractors rumbling.

Everything ive had here has been surprisingly good. The mussels are a must -- perfectly light and plenty to share for 2. I always order the seafood noodle soup -- its yummy and flavorful, and even better with some hot sauce added. Even the dessert is surprisingly tasty -- fried bananas which is essentially bananas wrapped in spring roll skin. Sooo good!!
They bring out the food pretty fast, the only thing that takes a while is getting the staff's attention before, during, and after the meal. But thats really not a good reason not to try this place out. The price combined with the deliciousness of the food... it cant be beat!

first off, this place is dark. but its not romantic to have to your date... and the couple you went there with whip out all of their cell phones just so you can read the menu. unlike candlelight, not everyone looks good under the blue-ish hue of the cell phone screen. and plus, the menu is page after page of a million different wines, champagnes, and various other kinds of drinks and desserts. (im not complaining about the selection, thats the only reason why i would give it an extra star)
so, the too-dim lighting + book of drinks typed up in 8-pt font = need extra time to decide what to get. unfortunately, the waitress did not understand that. i was ready to chuck that sticky book of drinks at her the fifth time she came around while i was STILL trying to figure out what to get.
and.. i thought this place was supposed to be posh? its not. i've seen sports bars with better decor than this place. just because you've got a couple of velvety couches and dim lighting doesnt mean you're too good to allow people wearing sneakers into this place. (yep, i had 2 friends who werent allowed in because they were wearing sneakers. one of them was a girl.) this place is old and dated. if they want to have a good reason for not letting people wearing sneakers in, they need to renovate.

anyway. go there. get the jumbo plate. prepare to have your socks knocked off. and im assuming if you've got that private jet, you'll be able to afford this place.
p.s. key lime pie is delicious... if you've still got room in your stomach and a couple bucks left in your wallet.
